Three Arrested in Nine-Year-Old Homicide Cold Case

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, June 23, 2026) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Cold Case Unit have identified three suspects in connection to a 2017 homicide case.

On Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, at approximately 8:04 p.m., officers responded to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon call for service in the 3700 block of Monroe Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, Raymond Johnson, who was pronounced deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

Homicide Detectives responded to the scene and began their investigation, but the case eventually went cold.

CMPD’s Cold Case detectives picked up the case and continued working on the case.

On Tuesday, June 16, cold case detectives signed warrants for murder on the following suspects:

  • Nathaniel ‘Nate’ Rorie, 39
  • Broderick Falls, 39
  • David Webber, 38

On Monday, June 22, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located and arrested Falls. Detectives transported Falls to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) to be interviewed. At the conclusion of this interview, Falls was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

That same day, CMPD VCAT, working with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the Horry County Police Department and the Myrtle Beach Police Department, located and arrested Rorie in South Carolina.

Detectives traveled to Horry County, South Carolina to interview Rorie.

Rorie will undergo extradition proceedings before returning to Mecklenburg County.

Webber is currently in the custody of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections at the Roanoke River Correctional Institution. CMPD Cold Case detectives are scheduled to travel today to interview Webber.

The CMPD Cold Case Unit would like to thank CMPD VCAT, SLED, the Horry County Police Department, the Myrtle Beach Police Department and the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections for their assistance in locating the three suspects.

The CMPD Cold Case Unit would also like to thank the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI), DNA Labs International, Bode Technology and the CMPD Crime Lab for their laboratory assistance in this case.

With these arrests, the 2017 homicide clearance rate rises to 77 percent.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Division.
