Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, May 18, 2026) – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has released the results of a recent enforcement operation targeting unreasonably loud motor‑vehicle noise during late‑night and weekend hours.

Queen City Safe and Sound is a coordinated, multi‑unit effort designed to address rising noise complaints tied to resonating exhaust systems, modified mufflers and amplified vehicle stereo systems—issues that continue to impact quality of life in Charlotte’s neighborhoods and entertainment districts. The initiative expands upon CMPD’s broader Queen City Safe strategy, supporting the department’s mission to reduce violent crime while enhancing safety, increasing officer visibility and responding directly to community concerns.

On Friday, May 15, CMPD's Southeast Service Area Crime Reduction Unit, Entertainment District Unit, and DWI Task Force, along with support from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol conducted the first Queen City Safe and Sound operation in CMPD’s Central Division. This focused enforcement effort targeted noise‑related traffic violations and other behaviors associated with disorder in high‑activity nighttime areas. Leveraging state and local legal authority, including NCGS 160A‑185 and the Article III Noise Ordinance, officers were able to address motor‑vehicle noise violations without relying on sound‑meter readings, ensuring efficient and effective enforcement in areas experiencing increased disorder and impaired‑driving trends.

The proactive enforcement effort resulted in the following totals:

  • Traffic Stops: 66
  • Citations Issued: 61 (including 16 specifically for loud muffler violations)
  • Arrests: 4
  • Firearms Seized: 4
  • Narcotics Seized: Approximately 226 grams

Criminal charges filed as part of the operation included:

  • Possession with Intent to Sell or Distribute Marijuana
  • Maintaining a Vehicle/Dwelling for the Sale of a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Marijuana Paraphernalia
  • Felony Carrying a Concealed Weapon
  • Simple Possession of Marijuana
  • Open Container Violation
  • Window Tint Violation

Launched in January 2026, the Queen City Safe initiative is a partnership-driven strategy designed to address crime hot spots and chronic quality-of-life concerns through high-visibility, data-driven enforcement.

Partnerships with local, state and federal agencies — including North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement, Mecklenburg County Alcohol Beverage Control, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation — have strengthened CMPD’s efforts and led to measurable reductions in criminal activity across the city.

Monthly Queen City Safe operations will continue rotating through all patrol divisions as CMPD remains committed to proactive crime prevention, holding offenders accountable and maintaining high community standards for residents and visitors.
