Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, September 26, 2025) – The CMPD is reporting an in-custody death of a subject after he was transported by Medic to the hospital.
On Friday, September 26, shortly after 3:30 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle operating without a license plate in the 800 block of Eastway Drive in the Eastway Division. During the initial interaction, officers developed probable cause to search the subject’s vehicle. The subject was removed from the vehicle and secured in the rear passenger compartment of a police patrol vehicle while officers conducted the search.
While the subject was detained in the patrol vehicle, he began to experience a medical episode. Officers immediately began rendering aid and called for Medic. Medic responded and transported the subject to a nearby hospital. The subject was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Due to the subject being detained prior to transport, this incident is classified as an in-custody death.
During the search of the subject’s vehicle, officers located and seized suspected illegal narcotics.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is the lead investigating agency in the case. As is standard procedure with an in-custody death, CMPD's Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation.
