Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, October 30, 2023) – Today, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) is sharing the results of street takeover enforcement over the weekend that resulted in officers towing 11 vehicles.
On Saturday, October 28, 2023, Transportation Division officers, along with officers from various patrol divisions, responded to multiple “street takeover events” in the Charlotte area including meetups near Statesville Avenue, West Arrowood Road, Nations Ford Road, West Boulevard and Wilkinson Boulevard.
Officers observed many of those taking part in the meetups over the weekend were from outside the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. Officers observed multiple individuals engaging in reckless driving during these meetups. The targeted enforcement resulted in the following:
- 13 citations
- 11 vehicles towed and placed on evidence hold
More enforcement actions including arrest warrants and seizure warrants may result following a review of the weekend’s incidents.
The CMPD does not take this issue lightly and the Transportation Division’s Street Takeover Task Force has ramped up its efforts to deter these incidents. Enforcement starting in February of this year has resulted in:
- 135 citations
- 29 arrests
- 94 vehicles towed
- 17 firearms seized
The CMPD will continue to target street takeover and street racing groups and conduct enforcement operations until the behavior stops. The CMPD is requesting the public’s help in reporting public safety issues. If citizens see these groups driving recklessly and behaving erratically, they’re asked not to engage but call 911. Tips can also be reported anonymously to Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
