Case Update: Officer-Involved Shooting in the Metro Division

 

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, October 10, 2023) – Officer Braylin Brown has been identified as the officer who discharged his service weapon in this case. As is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting investigation, Officer Brown has been placed on paid administrative leave. Officer Brown was taken to an area hospital for precautionary measures following the incident and has since been released from the hospital.

 

The decedent in this case has been identified as Nicholas Demar Lopez (DOB: 05/19/1979).  Mr. Lopez’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

 

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) is the lead investigative agency in this incident. The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.  Per standard procedure, CMPD will conduct a parallel internal investigation. Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, October 4, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the 100 block of Frazier Avenue in the Metro Division.

Preliminary information indicates that on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers responded to a shots fired call for service. Upon arrival, an officer encountered an armed subject matching the description of the individual in question. The officer gave repeated verbal commands for the subject to stop and drop the weapon. An encounter ensued resulting in shots being fired and the subject was struck. The officer was not injured. The officer immediately began rendering life-saving measures before MEDIC arrived. MEDIC transported the subject to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

A firearm was recovered on scene.

Homicide Unit detectives and the State Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene to conduct an investigation and process the scene. CMPD's Operations Command, Peer Support, Victim Services, Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office, Medic, and CFD also responded to assist.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) will be the lead investigative agency in this incident. The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.  CMPD will conduct a parallel internal investigation as that is standard protocol. CMPD Public Affairs Office will release the names of the officers involved when that information is available.
