Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation in the Independence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025) – The suspect has been identified as Benny Belvin Hall IV, 20.  He remains hospitalized in stable condition.

CMPD obtained warrants for Hall’s arrest. He is charged with the following upon release from the hospital:

  • Attempted Murder on a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Assault on a Government Official with a Firearm
  • Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle

On Wednesday, Aug. 27, a member of Hall’s family requested an Involuntary Commitment (IVC), which was ultimately denied by a Mecklenburg County Magistrate.

As is standard procedure with any officer-involved shooting, CMPD's Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by SBI or CMPD’s Public Affairs Division. Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, August 28, 2025) – On Thursday, August 28, shortly before 2 a.m., officers responded to an Assist MEDIC call for service in the 800 block of Pineborough Road in the Independence Division. Upon arrival, officers encountered a subject acting erratically who then immediately discharged a firearm toward the direction of the officers multiple times. Officers perceived an imminent and deadly threat and returned fire striking the subject several times. 

Officers immediately began rendering aid. MEDIC responded and transported the subject to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Preliminary information indicates that no officers were struck with gunfire. Three officers were transported as a precautionary measure. 

A firearm was recovered on scene.

Representatives from CMPD's Operations Command, Homicide Unit, Charlotte Fire Department and Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office responded. CMPD's Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is the lead investigating agency in the case. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation per standard protocol.
