CMS Employee Charged with Attempted Murder

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, Oct. 10, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Domestic Violence Unit are conducting an investigation involving Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) employee, Cheryl Harris Gates, 43.

On Friday, Oct. 10, detectives with CMPD's Domestic Violence Unit located and arrested Gates. Gates was transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) to speak with detectives.

Gates was then transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and is charged with the following:

  • Attempted Murder
  • Contaminate Food or Drink to Render One Mentally Incapacitated or Physically Helpless
  • Stalking
  • Damage to Property

This incident occurred off school property and did not involve any student, teacher or facility.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
