Fatal Hit and Run Crash in the Westover Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the Westover Division.
On Sunday, Aug. 24, at approximately 10:16 p.m., Westover Division officers responded to a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the 4500 block of Old Pineville Road. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers located a pedestrian, Mark Hendel, 52, in roadway. A wheelchair was also located nearby. MEDIC transported Hendel to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Hendel was in the roadway at the intersection of Old Pineville Rd. and East Exmore St. when he was struck by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene.
On Monday, Sept. 15, Mr. Hendel succumbed to his injuries sustained in the collision.
After the continued investigation, Major Crash Detectives with the assistance of the Westover Division identified a suspect, Ioannis Vlahos, 59 and was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Vlahos is charged with the following:
- Felony Hit and Run Inflicting Serious Injury or Death
- No Operator’s License
- No Liability Insurance
