Fatal Vehicle Crash in the Independence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, June 24, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle crash in the Independence Division.

On Thursday, June 12, at approximately 2:16 p.m., Independence Division officers responded to a vehicle crash with injuries call for service in the 5900 block of Monroe Road. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers located a Honda Civic and a Charlotte Water truck with extensive front-end damage. MEDIC transported the driver, Christina Whitman, 55, and the passenger, Theodore McCorkle, 64, to the hospital with life-threatening-injuries. The driver of the truck was transported with serious injuries.

Mr. McCorkle was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

On Friday, June 20, Ms. Whitman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The preliminary investigation indicates the Honda was traveling west bound on Monroe Road when it crossed over the double line and struck the Charlotte Water truck head on.

Impairment is suspected to be a contributing factor. Further investigation is needed to determine if the speed of the Honda is a factor.

Mr. McCorkle and Ms. Whitman’s next of kin has been notified of their death.
