No major incidents in Uptown during “No Kings” rally, two arrests made

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, June 14, 2025) – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) successfully executed a strategic operations plan during today’s “No Kings” rally in Uptown Charlotte. The event, organized by Indivisible Charlotte as part of a nationwide “Day of Defiance,” drew an estimated 5,500 participants and concluded with no major incidents.

The rally began at First Ward Park at 11 a.m. and included a peaceful march through Uptown. CMPD officers were deployed across the area to facilitate safe and open routes for the group to move freely while ensuring the safety of all residents, visitors and participants.

Following the official conclusion of the rally at 2 p.m., a smaller group of approximately 200 individuals, who were not affiliated with the event organizers, remained in the Uptown area and engaged in additional marches. During these subsequent activities, two adult individuals were arrested for assaulting law enforcement officers. The officers assaulted did not sustain any injuries.

Shortly after the second arrest, CMPD officers utilized oleoresin capsicum (OC spray) to gain compliance. The action was taken in response to individuals within the group who were aggressing on officers and physically pushing up against them. It was also necessary to prevent the group from entering a roadway that had not been closed to traffic and to ensure the safety of both participants and the public. One individual was transported non-life threatening by MEDIC to a local hospital for OC spray exposure.

The following adult suspects were arrested:

  • Tirsa Grande Sanchez, 20, is charged with Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Shannon Brooke Riley, 23, is charged with Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer

CMPD commends the professionalism of its officers and extends sincere appreciation to all public safety partners who collaborated to ensure a safe environment.
