Fatal Vehicle Crash in the Independence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, June 13, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle crash in the Independence Division.

On Monday, June 9, at approximately 3:08 p.m., Independence Division officers responded to a vehicle collision with injuries call for service in the 2700 block of Margaret Wallace Road. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers located a Toyota Camry off the right side of the roadway that had struck a retaining wall. The driver, Nina Kalapuch, 79, was unconscious and transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Kalapuch was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene and hospital to conduct their investigation and collect physical evidence. 

The preliminary investigation indicates the Toyota ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a retaining wall.

Alcohol impairment and speed are not suspected to be contributing factors of this crash.

Mrs. Kalapuch’s next of kin has been notified of her death.
