Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash Investigation in the Metro Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, May 2, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle crash involving a bicyclist in the Metro Division.
On Thursday, May 1, 2025, at approximately 5:18 p.m., Metro Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries involving bicyclist in the 1400 block of Beatties Ford Road. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers located two bicyclists on the sidewalk with serious injuries and a Polestar with extensive damage throughout the vehicle. Upon arrival of MEDIC, one bicyclist was transported to hospital and the other, Aleki Langi, 18, was pronounced deceased on scene by MEDIC. The driver of the Polestar failed to remain on scene or notify emergency services.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and DWI Task Force responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. Members of Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.
The preliminary investigation indicates the Polestar was traveling south on Beatties Ford Road when it failed to maintain its lane and went off the right side of the road striking Langi on the sidewalk. After Langi was struck, the Polestar slid against a light pole.
The Major Crash Investigation Unit is actively working to identify the driver of the Polestar.
Mr. Langi’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
The investigation into this crash is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office.
