Fatal Pedestrian Crash Investigation in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, April 29, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the North Tryon Division. 

On Monday, April 28, 2025, at approximately 6:58 a.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries involving a pedestrian in the 4900 Equipment Drive.

Upon arrival, officers located a pedestrian in the roadway with serious injuries and a Nissan Rogue with damage to the front-end located near the injured pedestrian. The pedestrian, Caroline Smith, 38, was pronounced deceased on the scene by MEDIC. The Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) also responded to the scene.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Motor Unit responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. Members of Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. 

The preliminary investigation indicates the Nissan was traveling north on Equipment Drive when Smith was struck as she was standing in the travel lane on Equipment Drive. The driver of the Nissan was not injured.

Toxicology results are pending for Smith.

Ms. Smith’s next of kin has been notified of her death.

The investigation into this crash is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office.
