Fatal Crash Investigation in the North Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, April 29, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the North Division.

On Monday, April 28, 2025, at approximately 1:21 a.m. North Division officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run motor vehicle collision with injury in the 8000 block of Old Statesville Road. Members of the Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) and MEDIC responded to the scene.

When emergency services arrived, they located an unresponsive pedestrian off the right side of the roadway. The pedestrian, Terry Mitchell, 53, was pronounced deceased on scene at 1:24 a.m. North Division officers were unable to locate a vehicle on the scene of the crash.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, officers with the DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to the scene to investigate.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2017-2019 grey or charcoal Honda CRV was traveling north on Old Statesville Road when it struck Mr. Mitchell while walking in the roadway. The unknown driver of the Honda CRV failed to stop the vehicle, contact emergency services or render aid to Mr. Mitchell.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is actively working to identify the Honda CRV.

Mr. Mitchell’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

The investigation into this crash is active and ongoing.
