Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, April 29, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the North Division.

On Friday, April 25, 2025, at approximately 11:43 p.m., North Division officers observed a Dodge Challenger with no lights driving at a high rate of speed. Officers attempted a traffic stop on the Dodge Challenger, but the driver failed to stop. Shortly after, officers discovered that the driver had collided with a GMC Sierra. Officers requested MEDIC to assist with the injured. At no point was CMPD engaged in a vehicle pursuit.

Upon arrival of MEDIC, the driver of the GMC Sierra and front passenger of the Dodge Challenger were transported by MEDIC to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center and Atrium Health with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Dodge Challenger, Albert Alexander III, 31, was pronounced deceased on scene by MEDIC.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motors Unit and Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to investigate the crash.

The preliminary investigation indicates the Dodge Challenger fled from a police vehicle with its emergency equipment activated while attempting to stop the vehicle. As the Dodge Challenger sped away, it struck a GMC Sierra, causing the Dodge Challenger to lose control and hit a tree on Old Statesville Road.

The speed of the Dodge Challenger is suspected to be the contributing factor of the crash.

Mr. Alexander’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

The investigation into this crash is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office. Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about this crash is asked to call Detective Kupfer at 704-432-2169, Ext. 1.
