Fatal Crash Investigation in the Hickory Grove Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, April 1, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist in the Hickory Grove Division.

On Thursday, March 27, 2025, at 8:34 p.m., Hickory Grove Division officers responded to a vehicle crash with injuries in the 14300 block of Albemarle Road. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive bicyclist, Stephen Bradley Lawson, 39, lying on the shoulder of the roadway. Nearby, officers located a gray 2008 Honda Accord with damage to the front of the vehicle and its driver stopped in the left lane on Albemarle Road. MEDIC transported Mr. Lawson to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Detectives with Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to the scene and began their investigation.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Lawson was riding his bicycle westbound in the left lane on Albemarle Road when he was struck by the Honda Accord. Mr. Lawson’s bicycle did not have any marker lights on the front or rear of his bicycle.

On Monday, March 31, 2025, at 4:45 p.m., Mr. Lawson was pronounced deceased at Novant Presbyterian.

Neither speed nor impairment are suspected factors for the driver of the Honda.

Toxicology results are pending for Mr. Lawson.

Mr. Lawson’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
