Fatal Crash Investigation in the North Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, March 10, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the North Division.
On Friday, March 7, 2025, at 1:55 a.m., North Division officers, the Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) and MEDIC responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries in the 5200 block of Sunset Road. Upon arrival, officers located a black Infinity G35 in the roadway with heavy right-side damage. Near the Infinity, officers located the driver, Jason Torres-Celis, 19, who was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. On the opposite side of the road, officers observed a Freightliner tractor-trailer with damage to the left side.
MEDIC pronounced Mr. Celis deceased on the scene. Mr. Celis was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit along with the DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search responded to conduct an investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Celis was traveling northeast on Sunset Road towards Statesville Road at a high rate of speed. Mr. Celis lost control of his vehicle, drove over the center median and crashed into the Freightliner that was traveling in the southwest direction.
It is not known if impairment was a factor in the collision though toxicology results are not complete.
Mr. Celis’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
