Fatal Crash Investigation in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, March 10, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the North Tryon Division.
On Friday, March 7, 2025, at 12:04 a.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to motor vehicle crash with injury call for service in the 5000 block of The Plaza. Upon arrival, officers located a severely damaged 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup truck and its injured driver, Jose Neptaly Lopez Rivera, 18. The Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) and MEDIC also responded to the scene. MEDIC pronounced Mr. Rivera deceased on the scene.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, members of the DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Rivera was traveling east on The Plaza at a high rate of speed when Mr. Rivera drove off the roadway to the right and struck a tree.
Speed and impairment are suspected factors for Mr. Rivera. Toxicology results are pending.
Mr. Rivera’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
