Case Update: Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation in the Metro Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, June 21, 2026) - As a result of the continued investigation, detectives identified Jarod Starks, 37, as a suspect in connection to this case.
Starks was arrested on scene shortly after the incident unfolded. After he was released from the hospital, he was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) and charged with the following:

Felony Assault with a Firearm on a Government Official

Possession of a Firearm by Felon

Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle

Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill (X3)

Attempted Armed Robbery

Going Armed to the Terror of the Public

Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation in the Metro Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, June 20, 2026) – On Saturday, June 20, 2026, shortly before 5 p.m., CMPD Dispatch received a Shooting Into an Occupied Vehicle call for service from a victim in the 2300 block of North Tryon Street. Shortly after that call, an off‑duty officer assigned to the CATS light rail was flagged down by this same victim. This officer responded immediately and encountered a subject believed to be involved in the incident. During the encounter, the officer perceived an imminent deadly threat and discharged their service weapon.
The suspect then fled into a nearby business. Once inside the suspect barricading himself. All individuals inside the business were able to evacuate safely. After a brief standoff, the suspect surrendered voluntarily without further incident. No injuries were reported for any community members. The officer and the suspect were both transported to a local hospital for precautionary measures.
An overwhelming police response was in the area and responded to the scene, ensuring the area was secured quickly and preventing further danger to the public. Officers worked methodically and professionally, demonstrating the commitment and training used to manage high‑risk situations.
Representatives from CMPD's Operations Command, Homicide Unit, Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) Unit, Charlotte Fire Department (CFD), MEDIC, Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) and Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office responded. CMPD's Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.
CMPD is the lead investigating agency in the case. As is standard procedure with any officer-involved shooting, CMPD's Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation. The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
