One Suspect Deceased After Fleeing From Stolen Vehicle Crash
Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, May 4, 2026) –The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's (CMPD) Major Crash Investigations Unit is conducting an investigation on Interstate 77 at Nations Ford Road.
On Sunday, May 3, shortly after 10:00 p.m., officers were alerted to a vehicle reported stolen from the 4700 block of Old Pineville Road. Officers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop; however, the driver refused to stop. In accordance with policy, officers deactivated their emergency equipment and subsequently lost sight of the vehicle.
A separate officer working an off‑duty assignment in an unmarked police vehicle, later observed the stolen vehicle. The officer did not attempt to stop it and continued to follow at a distance. The officer then witnessed the vehicle crash.
Following the crash, the two occupants exited the vehicle and fled on foot. One suspect was taken into custody. The second suspect ran across the northbound lanes of the interstate into the southbound lanes after fleeing from the wrecked vehicle and was struck by a passing motorist. MEDIC responded to the scene and attempted life saving measures however the subject was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter. The driver of the vehicle that struck the subject remained on scene, was cooperative and screened by CMPD's Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) Task Force and found not to be impaired.
Detectives with CMPD’s Major Crash Investigations Unit responded to the scene along with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) and Crime Scene Search. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Internal Affairs, CMPD’s Executive Staff, the Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded.
A parallel Internal Affairs investigation is also being conducted.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. Detective Leung is the lead detective assigned to this case.
