Fatal Crash Investigation in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, April 19, 2026) –Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a crash involving a Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Lynx train and pedestrian in the North Tryon Division.

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 5:47 a.m. officers responded to reports of a CATS Lynx train striking a pedestrian, Carlos Jamel Michilena, 32, at the intersection of North Tyon Street and Orr Road. When officers arrived, they located Mr. Michilena near the tracks unresponsive. Upon MEDIC’s arrival on scene Mr. Michilena was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, Transit Unit and Crime Scene Search were called to the scene and hospital to investigate. Members of the Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) also responded to the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicated that Mr. Michilena, was in the intersection and walked in front of the CATS Lynx train as it was entering the intersection from the north. Mr. Michilena was struck by the CATS Lynx train causing him to be thrown. All safety mechanisms for the CATS line at this location were in full effect and working properly.

On Sunday, April 19, 2026, at 7:41 a.m., Mr. Michilena was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Mr. Michilena’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

The investigation into this crash is active and ongoing.  As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Division.
