Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Providence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, March 25, 2025) – The victim in this case has been identified as Shamaree Bell-Brown, 20.

At the scene, Providence Division officers identified and arrested Maya Jena Jones, 20, as a suspect in this case.

Detectives have charged Jones with Murder, and she has since been transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Mr. Brown’s next of kin has been notified of this arrest.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Division. Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, March 24, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 3400 block of Burkland Drive in the Providence Division.

On Monday, March 24, shortly after 2 a.m., officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon with injury call for service in the 3400 block of Burkland Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim with stab wounds. The victim was transported by MEDIC to Novant Presbyterian Medical Center and pronounced deceased by medical staff.

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, CFD, MEDIC and the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Homicide Prosecution Team also assisted.
