Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the North Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, May 31, 2025) – The victim in this case has been identified as Jahlen McDonald, 25. As a result of the continued investigation and assistance from the community, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit detectives identified Thomas Cartee III , 24, as a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest.

On May 31, CMPD’s North Division Patrol Officers arrested Mr. Cartee without incident. He was brought to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) to be interviewed by detectives. Following his interview, Mr. Cartee was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Mr. Cartee has been charged with Homicide and Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

Mr. McDonald’s next of kin were notified of his death.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, May 31, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 9300 block of Broken Pine Lane in the North Division.

On Saturday, May 31, shortly after 12 a.m., officers responded to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon with injuries call for service in the 9300 block of Broken Pine Lane. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim with a gunshot wound and pronounced the victim deceased on scene.

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services and CFD also responded to assist.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
