Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Metro Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, March 8, 2026) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives identified a suspect in connection to this case and obtained warrants for his arrest.

On Sunday, March 8, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located and arrested J.B. James Jones, 37.

Jones was transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) to be interviewed by detectives. Upon conclusion of the interview, Jones was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Jones has been charged with:

Murder
Possession of a Firearm by Felon

The victim’s family has been notified of the arrest.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, March 7, 2026) – The victim in this case has been identified as Luis Fernando Hernandez, 27. The victim’s family has been notified of his death.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, March 6, 2026) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at the 2200 block of Alma Court in the Metro Division.

On Friday, March 6, shortly before 4:00 pm., officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service in the 2200 block of Alma Court. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim with apparent gun shot wounds. Officers attempted lifesaving measures. MEDIC pronounced the victim deceased.

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, CFD, Victim Services and MEDIC also responded to assist.
