Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Independence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, December 28, 2023) – As a result of the continued investigation and assistance from the community, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit identified and obtained arrest warrants for a suspect in connection to this case.
During the afternoon hours of Tuesday, December 26, 2023, Mr. Matthew Cornelius Whitstyne (DOB: 02/02/1980), turned himself into the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. Mr. Whitstyne has been charged with Murder.
The victim’s next of kin has been notified of the arrest.

Homicide Investigation in the Independence Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, December 3, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation near the 7100 block of Snow Lane in the Independence Division.
On Sunday, December 3, 2023, shortly after 7:30 p.m., Independence Division officers responded to an ADW with Injury call for service in the 7100 block of Snow Lane. Upon arrival, officers located one victim with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene by responding officers.
Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to investigate, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, Medic and the Charlotte Fire Department also assisted.
