Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Freedom Division

 

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, March 22, 2024) – The victim in this case has been identified as Robert Long, 53.  The victim’s next of kin has been notified of his death. 

 

As a result of assistance from the community, Dean Antonio Tate, 48, was identified as a suspect in this case and detectives obtained warrants for his arrest. 

 

During the early morning hours of Friday, March 22, 2024, Steele Creek Division officers located Mr. Tate’s vehicle.  Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, however, Mr. Tate fled from officers and vehicle pursuit ensued.  The pursuit concluded when Mr. Tate’s vehicle came to a stop in the parking of the lot of the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Uptown (601 E. Trade St.  Mr. Tate was taken into custody without incident.  Mr. Tate was then taken into the LEC and interviewed by homicide detectives.  At the conclusion of the interview, he was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following:

 

  • Murder (1st Degree)
  • Kidnapping (1st Degree)
  • Discharging a Firearm into Occupied Vehicle

 

The victim’s next of kin has also been notified of the arrest.

Homicide Investigation in the Freedom Division 

 

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, March 21, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 8000 block of Scottview Drive in the Freedom Division.

 

On Thursday, March 21, just after 6:30 p.m., officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon with injury call for service in the 8000 block of Scottview Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced deceased by officers. Preliminary information indicates that the victim and suspect were known to each other, and this is an isolated incident.

 

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victims Services, MEDIC and West Mecklenburg County Fire Department also assisted.
