Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Freedom Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, March 16, 2025) – As a result of the continued investigation into the death of Sumer Massey, 28, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) identified Stevie Bernard Walker, 53, as the suspect in this case and obtained warrants for this arrest.
On Sunday, March 16, 2025, Detectives with CMPD’s Violent Crime Apprehension Team (VCAT) and members of the Kannapolis Police Department located and arrested Walker without incident. Officers transported Walker to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) where he was interviewed by homicide detectives.
At the conclusion of this interview, Walker was transferred to custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Walker is charged with the following:
- First Degree Murder
- Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
Ms. Massey’s next of kin have been notified of this arrest.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, March 1, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at the 1200 block of Lucky Penny Street in the Freedom Division.
On Saturday, March 1, shortly after 9 p.m., officers responded to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon call for service at the 1200 block of Lucky Penny Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim with a gunshot wound. MEDIC pronounced the victim deceased on scene.
Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services and CFD also responded to assist.
