Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Eastway Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, July 15, 2026) – As a result of the continued investigation, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) detectives identified Cornelius Lamar Butler, 28, and Lashaundra Jackson, 35, as suspects in the homicide of Corey Barnard, 33.
On the morning of July 15, 2026, Mr. Butler was transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) to interview with homicide detectives. At the conclusion of this interview, Mr. Butler was charged with Firearm by Felon, was placed under arrest and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. An arrest warrant was obtained for 1st Degree Murder in the afternoon further into the investigation and served on Mr. Butler while he was in custody for the Firearm by Felon.
On July 15, 2026, Ms. Jackson was interviewed at the LEC. At the conclusion of this interview, Ms. Jackson was charged with Accessory After the Fact for Murder, placed under arrest and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Mr. Barnard’s next of kin has been notified of these arrests.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, July 14, 2026) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at the 1400 block of Eastcrest Drive in the Eastway Division.
On Tuesday, July 14, shortly before 7 p.m., officers responded to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon call for service at the 1400 block of Eastcrest Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim with apparent life-threatening injuries. Medic pronounced the victim deceased on the scene.
Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command and Victim Services also responded to assist.
