Homicide Investigation in the Eastway Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, July 14, 2026) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 2600 block Independence Blvd. in the Eastway Division.

On Friday, July 10, shortly before 8:00 p.m., officers responded to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon call for service in the 2600 block of Independence Blvd. The investigation revealed that two juvenile female victims had sustained gunshot wounds and transported themselves to the hospital. On Tuesday, July 14, one of the victims, Ya-Monnie Houston, 15, succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second victim remains in the hospital in critical but stable condition.    

Eastway Division detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. On Tuesday July 14, Homicide Unit detectives became involved in the investigation.  Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, CFD, Medic and the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Homicide Prosecution Team also assisted.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Division.
