Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Eastway Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, Nov. 7, 2025) – The victim in this case has been identified as Gerald Barnes, 68.

As a result of the continued investigation, Adam Mercado, 34, was identified as a suspect in connection to this case. Mercado was arrested by the Anson County Sheriff’s Office and later transported to Mecklenburg County where he was interviewed by CMPD homicide detectives.

At the conclusion of the interview, Mercado was transported to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Mercado is charged with First Degree Murder and Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

Mr. Barnes next of kin has been notified of his death and this arrest.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, November 6, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at the 1100 block of Central Ave. in the Eastway Division.

On Thursday, November 6, shortly after 9:00 p.m., officers responded to a Death Investigation call for service at the 1100 block of Central Ave. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim that had sustained apparent trauma.  Officers pronounced the victim deceased on scene.

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services and CFD also responded to assist.
