Homicide Investigation in the Central Division - 300 E 4th St

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, September 8, 2023) – As a result of the continued investigation, preliminary information indicates that upon arrival, two Allied Security Officers employed by the EpiCentre advised police that they were dispatched to the loading dock area in the 300 block of E. 4th Street in reference to a black male wearing white shirt and urinating on the wall.
The preliminary investigation indicates a struggle ensued when the security officer attempted to detain the subject. During the struggle, the subject drew a firearm and pointed it directly at a sworn company police officer. The officer was able to push the gun away before the subject discharged the firearm. MEDIC arrived on scene and pronounced the subject deceased.
The subject, identified as Kashaune Teal (DOB: 09/22/1998), has a lengthy criminal history including Kidnapping charges, Breaking or Entering, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Second Degree Trespass, Assault on a Campus Police Officer, Resisting a Public Officer, Disorderly Conduct and more.
The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office will determine if the shooting was justified or unjustified.
CMPD has been giving Uptown additional attention to reduce violent crime, with a focus on the Charlotte Transit Center (dubbed Operation Heartbeat). The focused area includes the CTC, the open areas around Spectrum Center, the EpiCentre parking deck as well as parking lots and garages adjacent to the transit center. So far in 2023 there have been five violent crimes in this specific area and in 2022 there had been 12 over the same time frame (January 1 – September 8) which is a 58 percent decrease in violent crime when comparing the two time frames. These five violent crimes in 2023 consisted of two aggravated assaults, two personal robberies and the homicide from last night. Overall, the Central Division is down 18 percent in violent crime year to date.

CLARIFICATION: Preliminary information indicates that upon officers’ arrival, the incident location was reported as the 4th Street side of the EpiCentre underneath the bridge to the light rail platform near the Transit Center.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, September 8, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 300 block of E. 4th Street in the Central Division.
Shortly after 12:30 a.m. on September 8, 2023, 911 operators received an assault with deadly weapon call for service near the 300 block of E. 4th Street. The initial investigation found that uniformed Allied security employees encountered a subject near the transit center. One Allied security employee, perceiving the deadly threat discharged their weapon, striking the subject. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
Central Division officers immediately arrived on scene and located one victim with an apparent gunshot wound. Medic also responded and pronounced the victim deceased on scene.
Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives of CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, CFD and MEDIC responded to the scene to assist.
