Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the North Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, August 17, 2023) The decedent in this case has been identified as David Joseph Leonhardt (DOB: 02/08/1991).  Mr. Leonhardt’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

 

Detectives with the CMPD’s Homicide Unit are not looking for any suspects in this case.  And, no charges are being sought at this time.

 

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office. Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, August 16, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 10100 block of Bellhaven Boulevard in the North Division.

 

On Wednesday, August 16, 2023, shortly before 10:30 a.m., an officer was notified of a larceny that occurred at the QuikTrip (QT) gas station located in the 10100 block of Bellhaven Boulevard.  The officer quickly located the vehicle related to the larceny and observed the occupant discharge a firearm from the vehicle as it left the gas station. This vehicle then returned to the QT gas station. At that time, an altercation occurred between the larceny suspect and a separate patron at the gas station. The patron discharged a firearm, striking the larceny suspect.

 

Officers discovered the subject with gunshot wounds. Cook’s Volunteer Fire Department and MEDIC responded to provide aid.  MEDIC pronounced the subject deceased on the scene.

 

Officers located the patron involved in this incident on scene and transported that person to the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown.  At this time, officers are not currently looking for any other suspects.

 

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, MEDIC and Cook’s Volunteer Fire Department also assisted.
