Fatal Vehicle Crash in the North Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, March 18, 2026) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle crash in the North Division.

On Tuesday, March 17, at approximately 11:48 p.m., officers responded to a vehicle crash in the 5900 block of Statesville Road in the North Division. Upon arrival, officers located a damaged Ford Escape and its unresponsive driver, Donnell Devone Dixson, 49. Officers also located a damaged Toyota Corolla and its injured driver and passenger. MEDIC arrived and pronounced Mr. Dixson deceased on scene. The injured driver and passenger of the Toyota Corolla were transported to a local hospital by MEDIC. Charlotte Fire also responded to assist.

Detectives with the Major Crash Unit, officers with the DWI Task Force, Motors Unit and Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to investigate.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Dixson was driving northbound in the southbound travel lanes of Statesville Road when Mr. Dixson struck the front of the Toyota Corolla.

Speed is a suspected factor for Mr. Dixson. At this time, impairment is unknown for either driver pending toxicology results.

The victim’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
