Fatal Vehicle Collision in the Freedom Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, May 27, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle collision involving a vehicle and a lawn mower that occurred near the 5700 block of Freedom Drive in the Freedom Division.

On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at approximately 9 p.m., Freedom Division officers responded to an accident with personal injury call for service near the 5700 block of Freedom Drive. When officers arrived on scene, they located an unresponsive male, Dexter Leon Monk, 63, laying in the middle of the roadway with life-threatening injuries and a 2001 Chrysler Town & Country with damage to the front of the vehicle occupied by a single driver, Kevin David, 58, that was stopped in the middle of the roadway. MEDIC responded and pronounced Mr. Monk deceased on scene. Mr. David was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to the scene and began their investigation. Initial investigation indicates Mr. Monk was operating a riding lawn mower and was driving westbound on Freedom Drive when he was struck by a vehicle from behind.

Mr. David was screened for impairment on scene and determined to not be impaired.

Neither speed nor impairment are suspected factors for this collision for Mr. David.

Impairment is a suspected factor for Mr. Monk. Toxicology Results are pending.
