Fatal Train Collision in the Steele Creek Division

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit investigating a fatal train crash involving a Norfolk Southern train and a pedestrian in the Steele Creek Division 

On Friday, January 9th, 2026, shortly after 7:44pm, Steele Creek Division officers responded to a call for service involving a Norfolk Southern train versus a pedestrian in the 5700 block of Old Pineville Road. Upon their arrival, officers located an unresponsive pedestrian Amber McGee, 37, alongside the northbound track with serious injuries. MEDIC pronounced Ms. McGee deceased on scene.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. Representatives from Norfolk Southern, the Charlotte Fire Department, MEDIC, and the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office also responded to the scene. The preliminary investigation indicated Ms. McGee was lying on the northbound track when she was struck by the Norfolk Southern train.

No impairment is suspected of the Norfolk Southern train operator.
