Fatal Pedestrian Investigation in the Freedom Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, March 1, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal hit and run crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the Freedom Division.

On Saturday, March 1, 2025, at approximately 2:13 a.m., Freedom Division officers responded to a hit and run call for service near the 9500 block of Wilkinson Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive pedestrian, Monique Williams , 48, in the middle of Wilkinson Boulevard with life-threatening injuries. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene. MEDIC pronounced Ms. Williams deceased on scene.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, members of the DWI Task Force, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates Ms. Williams was attempting to cross the 9500 block of Wilkinson Boulevard when she was struck by a white Nissan 350Z that was traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle that struck Ms. Williams fled the scene and was last seen driving eastbound on Wilkinson Boulevard towards I-485. Officers located the Nissan 350Z unoccupied on the I-85N ramp near Scott Futrell Dr.

The driver of the Nissan 350Z, Jonis Dany Sorto-Lovo, 20, was located, screened for impairment and subsequently charged with Felony Death by Vehicle, Felony Hit and Run, Reckless Driving, Driving While License Revoked and Driving After Consuming Under 21.

Ms. Williams next of kin has been notified of her death.
