Fatal Pedestrian Crash Investigation in the Providence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, August 19, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the Providence Division. 

 

On Sunday, August 18, 2024, shortly after 5 p.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries involving a pedestrian in the 3700 block of East Independence Boulevard in the Providence Division.  The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers located a pedestrian in the roadway with serious injuries. A Nissan truck with damage to the front-end was located near the injured pedestrian. MEDIC pronounced the pedestrian, Mr. Harry Brooks, 73, deceased on scene due to injuries he sustained from the crash. 

 

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, the DWI Task Force, and Motor Unit responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. Members of Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. The preliminary investigation indicates the Nissan was traveling east on East Independence Boulevard when Mr. Brooks was struck as he was running across East Independence Boulevard.  The driver of the Nissan, Claudio Maldonado, 44, was not injured.

 

Toxicology results are pending for Mr. Brooks.

 

Mr. Brooks’ next of kin has been notified of his death.
