Fatal Pedestrian Crash Investigation in the Metro Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, October 16, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian in the Metro Division. 

On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at approximately 1:22 p.m., Metro Division officers responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a CSX train near the 3600 block of Rozzelles Ferry Road.  Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male lying on the east side of Rozzelles Ferry Road that appeared to have been struck by a train.  Officers also located a CSX train nearby.  The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC responded to the scene.  MEDIC transported the pedestrian, Mr. Curtis Lee Hayes, 79, to Atrium Health Main with life-threatening injuries. 

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit responded to the scene to conduct their investigation and members of Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. The preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Hayes was walking westbound on Honeywood Avenue towards Rozzelles Ferry Road when he was struck by a train. 

On Saturday, October 12, 2024, shortly before 1:15 p.m., Mr. Hayes succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Mr. Hayes’ next of kin has been notified of his death.
