Fatal Pedestrian Accident Investigation in the Eastway Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, June 11, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident in the Eastway Division.

On Monday, June 10, 2024, at approximately 9:58 p.m., officers responded to the 3330 block of The Plaza in reference to a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers located a 2018 BMW 430i with damage to the front grill, hood and windshield and a male pedestrian was located lying in the roadway. MEDIC arrived on the scene and pronounced the pedestrian, Sugar Ray Robinson, 65, deceased due to injuries he sustained from being struck by the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, Christopher Bryant, 28, remained on scene. Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to investigate the incident. 

The preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian, Mr. Robinson, was crossing the The Plaza outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the BMW. The BMW and its driver, Bryant, remained on scene. Bryant was screened for impairment and determined to not be impaired. Further investigation will determine if speed was a factor for this crash. Toxicology results for Mr. Robinson are pending.

The family for Mr. Robinson has been notified of his death.
