Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, April 20, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motorcycle versus vehicle crash in the University City Division.
On Thursday, April 20, 2023, at approximately 3:56 a.m., University City Division officers responded to the 7300 block of North Tryon Street in reference to a 2022 Can-Am Ryker motorcycle that was struck by a 2007 GMC Sierra. Upon arrival, officers located the operator of the Can-Am, Andres Dions (DOB: 11/07/1993), lying in the roadway with serious injuries. The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic also responded to the scene to assist. Medic transported Mr. Dions to Atrium Health Main. He was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival. The driver of the GMC, David M. Peter Jr (DOB: 09/22/1986), was not injured and remained on scene.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates the Can-Am was stopped in the middle lane of travel and had possibly stalled out. The GMC, traveling in the same lane, did not see the motorcycle stopped and struck the rear of the motorcycle with the front of the GMC.
It is unknown if impairment is a factor for Mr. Dions. Toxicology results are pending. Mr. Dions was wearing a DOT approved helmet, however, he did not have a valid license nor a motorcycle endorsement.
Mr. Peter was screened for impairment, and was determined not to be impaired. It is unknown if speed was a factor.
Mr. Dions’ next of kin has been notified of his death.
