Fatal Hit and Run in the Metro Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, Feb. 16, 2026) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal hit and run in the Metro Division.
On Sunday, Feb. 15, at approximately 12:02 a.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries involving a pedestrian in the 2800 block of Freedom Drive. Members of Charlotte Fire and MEDIC also responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers located a female pedestrian, Deanna Moore, 30, lying in the roadway. MEDIC later pronounced Ms. Moore deceased on the scene. There was no vehicle located at the scene.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and DWI Task Force responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. Members of Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Ms. Moore was crossing the roadway when she was struck.
Officers obtained a description of the suspect vehicle from CMPD’s Real Time Crime Center. Officers later located the suspect vehicle and its driver, Yolanda Brown, 26, who showed signs of impairment. Based upon the damage to the vehicle, Ms. Brown should have reasonably known that her vehicle was involved in a collision and remained at the scene.
Ms. Brown was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following:
- Felony Death by Vehicle
- Hit and Run
- Possession of Cocaine
The victim’s next of kin has been notified of her death and this arrest.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Division.
