Correction: Fatal Crash Investigation in the Eastway Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, February 14, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Eastway Division. 

 

On Saturday, February 10, 2024, at approximately 1:45 a.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of Central Avenue and North Sharon Amity Road in the Eastway Division. Members of the Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene.

 

Upon arrival, officers located two vehicles – a Chevrolet Uplander lying on its passenger side and a Honda Accord with damage to the front end. An occupant of the Chevrolet Uplander was located unresponsive and partially ejected from the vehicle, while two occupants of the Chevrolet Uplander were located on scene with injuries and were transported to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center. The driver of the Honda, Edward Harmony Jenkins (DOB: 07/24/1992) and three occupants of the Honda remained on scene. These parties were not injured.  The unresponsive occupant of the Chevrolet Uplander, Abigail Ramirez Romero (DOB: 07/28/1984), was pronounced deceased on scene by MEDIC. 

 

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and DWI Task Force responded to the scene and hospital to conduct their investigation. CMPD Crime Scene Search also assisted.  

 

The preliminary investigation indicates the Honda Accord was facing south on North Sharon Amity Road to continue south on North Sharon Amity Rd.  The Chevrolet Uplander was traveling west on Central Avenue and entered the intersection at North Sharon Amity Road with a solid red light in its direction of travel, causing the Honda Accord and Chevrolet Uplander to collide. After the collision, the Chevrolet Uplander continued east on Central Avenue and rolled onto the passenger side.

 

Occupants of the Honda Accord were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. Occupants of the Chevrolet Uplander were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. Impairment is suspected for the driver of the Chevrolet Uplander.  The driver of the Chevrolet is still under investigation and has not been identified at this time.

 

Mr. Romero’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

­­­­­­­­Correction: In the original media release emailed on Saturday, February 10, 2024, we stated Mr. Edward Harmony Jenkins was the driver of the Chevrolet in the fatal crash that occurred on Sat., February 10, 2024, at approximately 1:45 a.m.  This is incorrect, Mr. Jenkins was the driver of the Honda.  The driver of the Chevrolet is still under investigation and has not been identified at this time.

Two occupants from the Chevrolet Uplander were transported with injuries to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center.
