Fatal Crash Investigation in the Westover Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, January 16, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Westover Division.

 

On Sunday, January 14th, 2024, shortly after 8:53 p.m., the Steele Creek Division received a call for service in reference to an armed robbery. The victim advised that her 2020 Dodge Challenger was stolen at gun point. The information was relayed to officers in the area via radio. Officers located the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop but the driver, Ramon Zavari Miller (DOB: 11/04/2005), drove off at a high rate of speed. CMPD officers pursued the Dodge Challenger onto I-77 North. The vehicle got off on the Tyvola exit still traveling at a high rate of speed. The driver of the Dodge Challenger then lost control of the vehicle and crashed. The Charlotte Fire Department as well as MEDIC responded to assist. MEDIC pronounced Mr. Miller deceased on scene.

 

Detectives from the CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit responded to conduct the investigation. The Crime Scene Search Unit responded to process and collect physical evidence. Representatives from the CMPD’s Operations Command, CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau and the Medical Examiner’s Office also assisted.

 

The preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Miller, the driver of the vehicle, stole the Dodge Challenger during an armed robbery in the Steele Creek Division. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, Mr. Miller did not stop and officers pursued the vehicle. The Dodge Challenger was traveling at a high rate of speed while traveling on the off ramp of I-77 North to get on Tyvola Rd. Mr. Miller was attempting to make a right turn onto Tyvola Rd. when he lost control of the vehicle. The Dodge overturned several times and Mr. Miller was ejected from the vehicle.

 

Speeding and reckless driving are contributing factors for this crash. Impairment is unknown for the driver and is pending toxicology results.

 

Mr. Miller’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
