Fatal Crash Investigation in the University City Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, October 16, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are conducting a fatal motor vehicle crash investigation in the University City Division.
On Monday, October 16, 2023, at approximately 6:38 a.m., University City Division officers responded to a motor vehicle collision in the 800 block of West Mallard Creek Church Road. Upon arrival, officers located a 2000 Buick LeSabre and a seriously injured pedestrian in the roadway. MEDIC responded to the scene and transported the pedestrian to Atrium Health Main with life-threatening injuries. The victim was later pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, Motor Unit, and CMPD’s Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates the Buick was traveling southeast on West Mallard Creek Church Road when an electronic motorized skateboard, operated by, Jalen Donovan Worthy (DOB: 06/10/2003), crossed into the path of the Buick. Mr. Worthy was struck by the Buick in the left travel lane. The driver of the Buick, Chuckwuemeka Azubuike Odudo (DOB: 05/16/1977), remained on scene. The accident occurred in a dark and unlit area and Mr. Worthy was not in the crosswalk.
Toxicology results for Mr. Worthy are pending.
Mr. Worthy’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
