Fatal Crash Investigation in the Steele Creek Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, June 16, 2026) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle crash in the Steele Creek Division.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025, at approximately 10:50 a.m., officers, Charlotte Fire and MEDIC responded to 9000 block of S. Tryon Street in reference to a public accident involving a motorized scooter.

Upon arrival, officers located the motorized scooter operator, Johnie Wesley Mason IV, 53, lying unresponsive near the scooter.

MEDIC transported Mr. Mason to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Mason was operating the scooter before losing control and falling off.

On Sunday, June 14, Mr. Mason was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The victim’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Division.
