Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, May 21, 2026) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the South Division.

On Tuesday, April 21, at approximately 2:47 a.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries involving a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department vehicle at the intersection of Pineville-Matthews Road and Carmel Road. Upon arrival, officers located a marked CMPD Ford Explorer and a Honda Odyssey both with heavy front-end damage. The officer operating the Ford Explorer and three occupants of the Honda were transported to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The fourth occupant of the Honda was also transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit responded to the scene and the hospital to conduct an investigation. Members of Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the officer was responding to a call for service with the CMPD Ford Explorer’s emergency equipment activated. As the Ford Explorer was traveling south on Carmel Road and the Honda Odyssey was traveling east on Pineville-Matthews Road, a collision between the two vehicles occurred at the intersection of Pineville-Matthews Road and Carmel Road.

On Wednesday, May 13, at 7:24 p.m. an occupant of the Honda, Vandita Mehta, 52, was pronounced deceased due to injuries she sustained from this crash.

The family of Mehta have been notified of her death.

A separate but parallel internal investigation is being conducted. As is customary with any officer-involved fatal crash, the officer has been placed on paid administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigations.

This is an ongoing, active investigation. As further information develops, it will be released by CMPD’s Public Affairs Division.
