Fatal Crash Investigation in the Metro Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, Oct. 3, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal hit and run collision involving a pedestrian in the Metro Division.
On Wednesday, Oct. 1, at approximately 8:26 p.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the 2100 block of Beatties Ford Rd. Upon arrival, officers located a victim, James Leon Hall, 58, lying in the roadway with life-threatening injuries. MEDIC transported Hall to a hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
Witnesses on scene stated Hall was struck by a Chevrolet SUV that fled the scene traveling south on Beatties Ford Road.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Hall was crossing the roadway outside of a designated crosswalk when he was struck by the Chevrolet SUV at a high rate of speed.
At approximately 10:45 p.m., Metro Division officers stopped the suspect vehicle on Hildebrand Street. The suspect driver, Luis Alberto Miranda Vilchis, 35, spoke to officers and was arrested and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Vilchis is charged with the following:
- Felony Death by Vehicle
- Felony Hit and Run
- No Operator’s License
- Improper Registration
Speed and impairment are factors for Vilchis.
It is unknown if impairment is a factor for Hall.
Mr. Hall’s next of kin has been notified of his death and this arrest.
