Fatal Crash Investigation in the Metro Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, March 8, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Metro Division.
On Thursday, March 7, 2024, at approximately 10:33 p.m., Metro Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of Statesville Avenue and Atando Avenue. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers located a Dodge Charger with heavy front damage and a Ford Crown Victoria with heavy front-end damage on fire. Officers were able to remove the driver of the Ford. Upon the arrival of the Charlotte Fire Department the fire from the Ford was extinguished. MEDIC arrived on scene and pronounced the driver of the Ford, Stephen Eric Bowman, 43, deceased due to injuries he sustained. The driver of the Dodge, Jordan Devont Mitchell, 27, was transported to Novant Presbyterian Medical Center with serious injuries. The front seat passenger, Ya’Aunna Broome, 21, and the rear seat passenger, Nicholas Vincent Trapni, 29, were transported by MEDIC to Novant Presbyterian Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and the DWI Task Force responded to the scene and hospital to conduct their investigation. Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates that the Dodge Charger was attempting to make a left turn with a solid red traffic light in its direction of travel. The Ford was traveling straight with a solid red traffic light in its direction of travel. Both vehicles entered the intersection and collided.
It is unknown at this time if speed is a factor in this crash. Toxicology reports are pending.
Mr. Bowman’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
