Fatal Crash Investigation in the Independence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, December 11, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Independence Division.

 

On Sunday, December 10, 2023, at approximately 9:24 p.m., Independence Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries in the 7500 block of Monroe Road.  The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic also responded to the scene.  Upon arrival, officer located a 2007 Nissan Murano with passenger side damage and a 2022 Mazda CX-5 with extensive front end damage.  The driver of the Nissan, Hector Domingo Medrano Orellana (DOB: 12/20/1979), was pronounced deceased on scene.  The driver of the Mazda, Kevin Flanigan DOB: 08/04/1988, was transported by Medic to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

 

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, the DWI Task Force, along with Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation.   The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the Nissan was traveling south on Monroe Road when he lost control, crossed the center line and struck the Mazda head-on. 

 

Mr. Orellana’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
