Fatal Crash Investigation in the Independence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, March 21, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian that occurred in the Independence Division.
On Saturday, March 1, 2025, at approximately 8:26 p.m., Independence Division officers responded to an accident with personal injury call for service near the 7400 block of E. Independence Boulevard. When officers arrived on scene, they located an unresponsive pedestrian, Mauricio Perez-Hernandez, 30, laying in the middle of the roadway and a black 2019 Mercedes Benz Sprinter van occupied by a single driver, David Queen, 71, stopped on the right side of the roadway.
MEDIC transported Mr. Hernandez to Novant Presbyterian Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Mr. Queen was not injured and refused medical treatment.
The initial investigation by the CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit indicates Mr. Perez-Hernandez was attempting to cross the 7400 block of E. Independence Boulevard outside of a designated crosswalk when he was struck by the 2019 Mercedes Benz Sprinter van which had the right-of-way.
Neither speed nor impairment are contributing factors for this collision for Mr. Queen. Impairment is a contributing factor for Mr. Perez-Hernandez.
On Monday, March 17, 2025, Mr. Perez-Hernandez was pronounced deceased at Novant Presbyterian at 5:54 p.m. Mr. Perez-Hernandez’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
